Inspire: The Art of the Storyteller

You have a message that is so integrally a part of who you are that when you speak of it, you are literally transmitting yourself into the hearts and minds of others. When you realise that the most important aspect in life for us all is to know connection, to regain that wonderful feeling of love and complete envelopment with those we care about; when you know that loneliness and isolation are illusions that separate us from that life purpose, you see that communicating your truth is a way of finding connection to all life and all things.

One day, I was speaking to a client who was focussing on her life, or rather, what she perceived to be her life, her challenges and limitations. She saw her immediate surroundings, her family, her home as being so big and overwhelming that she could not look passed these things to the infinite source of joy beyond. Without that connection, she felt unable to live her life as she wanted to. As she began to cry with desperation, fear, and a total lack of hope, I smiled and I began…

One day, Grandmother Sun gazed out at her children and saw that Father Earth was sad. She reflected for a moment and then asked, “Why are you so sad?”
“Because” Earth replied, “This morning I was born and everything was cold and I felt alone. Then I learnt to fly like an eagle across oceans and forests and mountains. I was free and I was alive.”
“Sounds, beautiful!” Grandmother Sun murmured with introspection.
“But I still felt alone and up so high it was still cold. However, I then spied a community of rabbits, feasting and playing in a field. So I swooped down and became a rabbit and I lived and I loved. For many months I played in the field, I ate the lush grass and scented flowers. I fell in love and had children of my own.”
Sensing that Father Earth had become quiet, the Sun offered encouragement. “Go, on” she said.
“And then a man came and he killed my children and my companion. And I was alone again. And I have never felt such grief or cried so hard.”
“And what did you do then?” The Sun asked, benevolently.
“I wanted to know why! I could not understand why the man could do this, why he needed to take away what I loved the most, why he needed to destroy! So, I became a man and then I discovered something that changed me so irreconcilably that I will never be the same again!”

Stories are magical. They speak to the child within us all and it is the child that desires to understand, to learn and discover. So when you speak to the child, you help others to explore their own truth. ‘Inspire’ is a two day inspirational seminar on the power of oral folk lore, storytelling, and communication of knowledge. It begins with the ancient people, sitting around the fire on an autumnal evening, sharing stories of mysterious powers and creatures that lurk in the dark. It tells us that once upon a time, things were hidden; the world seemed dark and enigmatic. It was dangerous and unknown.

We then look at how oral tradition evolved into dramatic arts, the ballad and the poem, before being written down and dogmatised. As we gradually lost the art of storytelling in the oral tradition, we familiarised ourselves with books and radio, tv shows and movies. We could keep hold of the moment and listen again and again, reread, and repeat view. The magic of the present moment was gone and we started to exist in memories of the past and hopes for the future, because if we missed the now, we could always catch up tomorrow.

The transitory and the fleeting became things to be dismissed, as they were not of value unless they could be reused and recycled; committed to paper for an eternity. Our focus shifted from the internal world of our joy, life and connection to the Earth and became about watching tv, or gaining pleasure from some external stimuli.

Now, however, we are recapturing the moment, the magic, the joy of shared oral tradition and storytelling. People are reawakening to the power of memories and how a moment of interaction between a group of friends can inspire us to learn and discover throughout a whole lifetime.

The ‘Inspire’ Seminar creates a dynamic, learning experience so dramatic and awe-inducing that it will change the way you communicate with others, the way you present, the way you teach, the way you are. It will give you something at a very profound level that cannot simply be talked about or shown – it must be experienced to be understood…

“As I stepped into the world as a man, I discovered how to express my joy, my freedom, my loneliness and pain in art and songs, and books. I shared my grief and my love with others with each flicker of the screen and turn of the page. I learned how to connect with my fellow people in communities and societies and as friends and lovers. I feasted, and made love, and saw the most beautiful skies, filled with stars. I made money and gained notoriety, I built cities and lived amongst many, just like in my rabbit warren. I few in planes across oceans and forests, as if I were an eagle again.”
“It sounds magical, my child” Grandmother Sun replied, respectfully. “And what did you learn?”
“In all my experiences, my memories and my dreams, I learnt that the world is a complex place, filled with love and hate, joy and pain. It is out of control and no matter what we do, it happens to us, we become involved in it and lost to it. No matter how free the eagle feels, she is still soaring alone, no matter how much the rabbit feels connection to his companions, that connection can be taken away. Regardless of the ability of a man to love, she can still choose to hate and does, even when those she hates never asked for, or needed, or deserved her hatred.”
“And what did you forget?” Asked the Sun with a tone of knowing in her voice.
“Forget?” Replied the Earth. “I don’t know!”
“You forgot that you are the Earth.”
The Earth remained silent for a while.
“You are the Earth and everything living thing that creates the Earth. You forgot that the eagle and the rabbit and the man are not separate from you. They are born of you. They are you and you are them! At any moment you are tasting the lush grass, or finding joy in the lyrics of a song. You are flying over oceans and gazing at the stars!”
“But it doesn’t feel like that!” The Earth said suddenly.
“Of course not! When you are the Earth as a man, you act like a man and when you are the Earth as an eagle you fly like an eagle and when you are the Earth as a rabbit you feel like a rabbit – how else would you be able to commit to the moment and experience it as if it were real?”
“How do you know this?” The Earth whispered, quietly, yet urgently.
“Because I feel like a sun, I act like a sun, I shine. I give life and I take life away. I have been a sun for many millions of years and shall be a millions more. However, this is not what I have always been and not what I will always be.”
“What do you mean?” The Earth seemed puzzled.
“I am made of stardust. The molecules that create me were once stars in the ancient Universe, which were born, lived, and died in a blinding instant that appeared to be billions of years. You and I are both made of stardust and when we are gone, others will be born and live as who they are, but they will still be stardust. Every experience you have will be a part of that stardust, just as the memories of those long gone are part of you, if you just remember to listen.”

I noticed that my client was looking rather rabbit-like at me. So I smiled and said. “You believe that you are this person, in this life, with all these issues and challenges. However these are merely your current experiences. You are making memories that you chose to make. But you are a soaring eagle, a rabbit in love, a man creating art and war. You are of the Earth – you are the Earth and the Sun. You are stardust. You have within you the knowledge of everything that had been and everything that will be. And with all that wisdom, all that power, you can be whatever you want to be and experience whatever you want. You create your life and you’ve just forgotten for the moment that you are stardust and all you need to do is to remember to listen…”
