A Foundation in Creative Writing Therapy

Divided into six modules this course covers many objectives, providing a wealth of knowledge, skills and techniques. It is designed as a standalone course for those wanting to learn Creative Writing as an art form, and people looking for ways to combat conditions such as stress, depression, life issues, etc., or as a foundation for therapists wishing to integrate this exciting, complimentary therapy with their current treatments.

It has been the focus of many studies, how sensory and creative activities can improve quality of life and holistic well-being and a large section of this course is dedicated to using Creative Writing as a therapeutic tool, both to confront emotional, mental and physical issues and stimulate creative energies. Some of the aims included are to explain both theoretically and practically the methods behind Creative Writing Therapy, in addition to improving students' writing skills, imagination and ability to produce many forms of writing.

The initial stages of the curriculum use words, particularly written words to display the emotive ability of language, followed by the formation of basic descriptive passages to objectify and clarify situations, events, or circumstances. Then students will be shown many of the techniques used for creative writing forms, including, Novels, Short Stories, Poetry, and Basic Script Writing.

A look at characterisation, situation and momentum offers insight into the dynamics of writing, while specially produced activities motivate and encourage unexploited talents and abilities. As the course progresses, these proficiencies will be expanded into various other aspects of the students' life, from communication and business to personal outlook.

Finally the course will bring together all the numerous elements to enable the student to produce a portfolio of creative writing, not to mention express any beneficial changes that have occurred.

In addition to the six modules there will be six written assignments, of which four must be completed satisfactorily to pass this course. However, work will be tailored to the needs of the individual and as well as a basic requirement there will be commended and highly commended grades. There will be an online resource for use in conjunction with other class materials, tutor email support, fully comprehensive notes and all other materials needed.

Module One - An Introduction to Words, Linguistics and Social Interaction

Module One starts by looking at words: the very foundation of language. The relationship between words and our emotions is explored through various exercises. We see the effect of simple sentences when applied to everyday situations and look at the telling of basic stories. The subjects of psycholinguistics and sociolinguists are studied along with Neuro-Linguistic-Programming to gain an insight into the spoken word, all of which leads to the first exercises in writing and therapeutic writing.

Module Two - Forms of Writing: From Notes to the Novel

Module Two investigates contrasting forms of writing from notes, letters and diaries, to novels and plays. We consider how each is written and the methods it employs to achieve results. It is then shown how these methods can be manipulated to work through personal issues; release anxiety, anger and sorrow; and improve attitudes toward difficulties and blockages. Students are then given the opportunity to work closely with the concept of second-hand problem solving.

Module Three - The Basics of Creative Writing

By now, students should have become accustomed to writing extended pieces of text and so we turn our attention to the fundamentals of creative writing, beginning with the creation of characters. The students then examine how each character evolves as numerous situations; conflicts; and other factors are encountered. This process then leads to comparison with real life and looks at how externalising difficult issues through writing can clarify and dispel emotional & psychological trauma.

Module Four - The Therapy of Creative Writing: The techniques

At this juncture, students will have written several pieces of fiction and should now feel confident enough to commence work on extended pieces of prose. Using the skills acquired previously they will discover way of conceiving interesting and original stories from their own experiences and imagination. We look at research techniques and skills such as time-management, motivation and dealing with the dreaded writers' block.

Module Five - The Therapy of Creative Writing: Putting it all together

Having the early stages of an extensive portfolio, students turn their attention inwards. They investigate ways to improve their natural writing abilities and build on the things discovered during the course, with even more powerful creative systems. Students then apply these systems to their writing and everyday life, in order to construct a holistic approach to their abilities and life in general. The week concludes with the start of a life-script/life-novel.

Module Six - The Therapy of Creative Writing: Looking back/looking forward

In this module, we consolidate the work of the previous weeks and look to the future; seeing how students can use their skills to benefit a career in writing, or in Creative Writing Therapy. We look at techniques to assist in finding an agent or publisher and for those wishing to advance to the Therapists' Course in Creative Writing Therapy, preparatory advice and notes are provided. We look at practical skills and alternative activities to assist students in the future, whatever that may be…
